Field geology behind Drill Deep

Research checked 10 October 2026. Historical geology references are identified separately from dated industry developments.

The formations and regional settings below inform the game. Individual wells, seam positions, depths, reservoir thicknesses, gas assays, production values and operating choices are fictional. This is an arcade geological exploration game, not a drilling programme or a prediction for a real lease.

What the visible rock represents

The drilled section now distinguishes named regional facies: Red Jacket sand–mud interlamination, Midale upper marly and lower vuggy carbonate, Glauconitic sand with mud drapes, and hard Cardium sandstone/conglomerate enclosed by mudstone. Horizontal fabric follows the same folded, fault-offset and pinching pay boundaries used by reservoir-contact checks. Bed fabric is schematic and exaggerated for legibility; exact seam positions, depths and structures are simulated rather than a surveyed field section.

Wapella's established Red Jacket production is distinguished from its optional deeper Bakken and Torquay prospects. A muddy pilot sample or commingled carbonate sample does not prove continuous productive rock. Local scenarios preserve this uncertainty and the cost of resolving it. Motor stalls and worn-cutter events depend on the selected assembly and current game condition.

Carbonate surface detail — 20 October 2026

Micrite has a fine groundmass motif; vuggy material has clustered irregular recesses and restrained pale rims; oolitic material has coated-grain motifs; selected dolostone has subtle angular crystal facets. These replace the generic mirrored photographic carbonate overlay, not the formation/facies model. Low-contrast matrix patches are illustrative lighting and roughness, not additional beds, measured clasts or a mineral map. Fixed cached tiles still repeat; this is not a non-repeating core image.

General terminology is supported by SLB's micrite, vug and dolomite entries, and the BGS ooid-calcite-limestone definition. Those sources do not establish a particular game's grain size, vug volume, permeability, connectivity or diagenetic history. Marks are deliberately exaggerated display conventions, not measured pore geometry or a new porosity log. Existing synthetic logs/contact checks and water colours remain authoritative; a drawn vug does not establish productive rock. Formation-specific fossil rules and their independent evidence remain unchanged.

Horizontal-section clastic surface detail — 20 October 2026

The live horizontal challenges use larger deterministic cached surface tiles for shale, organic shale, siltstone, fine sand, sandstone and glauconitic sand. Shale uses dense short platy marks; silt and sand use increasingly granular motifs; glauconitic sand adds sparse muted-green grains. Low-contrast irregular patches break up flat colour without drawing a bed. The old mirrored photographic quadrants are no longer composited into these grain-only HZ materials. A uniform display scale prevents vertical exaggeration from stretching particles, while the texture origin remains fixed to the section's world zero.

SLB's shale definition supports fine detrital particles and aligned platy or flaky grains. SLB's sandstone definition supports predominantly sand-sized grains, and SLB's glauconite definition supports a green mineral that can occur in sandy deposits. These sources support only broad visual motifs. Particle size, colour, density, sorting and display scale are illustrative and do not identify mineralogy, measured grain size, porosity, permeability, reservoir quality or a formation. Exact material polygons, water state, contacts, faults, logs and productive-contact calculations still come from the existing scenario model. Fixed 384-pixel tiles still repeat over long spans; this is not a core photograph or a non-repeating outcrop.

Wapella / Red Jacket, southeast Saskatchewan

The first-level area offers distinct Cretaceous and Jurassic sandstone targets. Historical operator reporting describes medium-gravity oil from both systems and waterflood development. A producing area does not imply that every sand intersection is connected or commercial. Operator annual filing, 2008.

Selectable targetGeological basisGame consequences
Wapella Sand / CantuarLower Cretaceous Mannville reservoir, kept separate from Jurassic sands. Regional Mannville sedimentation includes fluvial and estuarine valley fill. Older local core work describes a beach-type Wapella sand; precise facies require local core/log correlation.Sand shale-out, erosional relief and patchy reservoir quality. Local thin coal/carbonaceous facies are a modelled Mannville possibility, not a documented seam prediction.
Red Jacket — MoosominJurassic clastics in a succession spanning freshwater, brackish and open-marine settings. Moosomin and Rocanville are historically producing members in the Wapella–Moosomin area.Thinning pay, short mudstone gaps, and adjacent sand bodies at different elevations.
Red Jacket — RocanvilleA separate lower member with sandstone, mudstone and carbonate beds. Sharp/erosional contacts and local thickness variability complicate correlations.A new target for the next well, with its own horizontal and completion outcome.

Kreis documents discontinuities and lateral lithofacies changes; subsequent work also relates the regional history to Prairie salt dissolution. The game uses modest relief and discontinuous sands rather than assigning every change to a fault. I found no basis in the reviewed local sources to call this whole oilfield a turbidite play. The exact higher/lower sand connections shown in the game are designed scenarios.

Bakken and Torquay prospects at Wapella

The added game prospects use a low-production baseline requested by local field experience, with fictional depths and occasional better pay. Regional research supports Middle Bakken siltstone/sandstone and Torquay silty dolostone reservoirs. It does not establish a Wapella-wide channel model or measured production forecast. Horizontals can connect porous fairways and streaks; Torquay sweet spots are not labelled sandstone channels. Three possible pockets are fixed at lateral creation. Two good pockets with at least 65 m contact each improve the simulated outcome; landing alone does not guarantee good production.

Nevada geothermal fracture corridors

Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology Report 58 inventories more than 200 known Basin and Range geothermal systems. Relay ramps, fault terminations and intersections commonly concentrate fracture density and permeability, while the main fault trace alone is not a guarantee of flow. USGS work at Brady likewise found productive intervals close to stressed faults and dense fractures, but throughgoing vertical connectivity was rare and spatially variable. At Dixie Valley, borehole televiewer, spinner and temperature logs were used together to identify conductive fractures.

The two dipping traces in the Nevada rock view are therefore illustrative game corridors, not mapped faults from Brady, Dixie Valley or a real lease. Their positions, depths, widths, loss response, survey readings and flow consequences are simulated. The player encounters only the corridor intersecting the selected hot reservoir. Paying for a borehole-image, temperature-recovery and spinner-style interpretation fixes that evidence for the well; indiscriminately sealing the whole loss corridor reduces the game’s natural-flow and reinjection capacities. This is evidence-based gameplay, not an operational loss-treatment procedure.

Coal: formation and trajectory matter

Cleated coal can admit drilling fluid, lose strength, shed cavings and contribute to hole enlargement, losses and stuck pipe. A published Mannville horizontal case documents these mechanisms. Impact Fluid Solutions — operator case study.

AreaCoal-bearing setting used
HINTON AB FOOTHILLSWapiti/Belly River and terrestrial Spirit River equivalents. Falher/Wilrich coal encounters also reflect the player’s supplied local wellsite experience; coal is not assigned to every marine Wilrich bed.
Southern AlbertaBelly River and continental Mannville intervals. Marine Milk River / Medicine Hat pay is not automatically filled with coal.
Southeast SaskatchewanLocal Mannville terrestrial facies, where present. Midale/Frobisher carbonates and Red Jacket marine sands do not acquire arbitrary thick coals.
North SlopeNonmarine Nanushuk coal-bearing facies adjacent to deltaic sandstones; not every Nanushuk petroleum reservoir is coal-bearing.
Permian, geothermal, deepwaterNo blanket coal placement in the current carbonate, hard-rock or deep-marine sections.

The game raises risk for thicker seams, faster drilling and exposure at ≥65° inclination. The angle comes from supplied field experience and is a gameplay threshold, not a universal geomechanical limit. Low-angle crossings can still have problems. Controlled management reduces risk; ignored cavings can progress to packoff, a parted BHA and fishing.

Deep Saskatchewan helium and natural hydrogen

Helium is an established Saskatchewan exploration/production commodity. Basal Cambrian sands and Devonian carbonates are important regional targets. Radiogenic helium can migrate from old crust into sealed sedimentary traps. Natural hydrogen has different generation mechanisms and remains an emerging exploration play. Donaldson, GeoConvention 2026.

Deep exploration in the game can identify a Deadwood helium candidate and a basement-contact hydrogen anomaly. These are provincial analogues placed in fictional Saskatchewan wells, not evidence of either resource beneath the Wapella or Stoughton oilfields. Hydrocarbon mud-gas units, oil fluorescence and low gamma ray do not establish He/H₂ identity. Players need dedicated composition, repeat sealed sampling and contamination checks, reservoir/seal evaluation, sustained flow and a processing plan. An anomaly earns no automatic production payout.

Hydrogen success in Drill Deep is a hypothetical pilot outcome. Game concentrations and feasibility screens are not quoted field assays or universal commercial cutoffs. Helium and hydrogen retain distinct labels in the saved well ledger.
